Notes from Mack Brown's Monday Press Conference (11-1)
By: Shea
- Appreciated the crowd who welcomed McCoy for his retirement ceremony as well as the families affected by breast cancer.
- The guys played hard, and there's a fine line between winning and losing, as shown by the following stats:
- Penalties last year to this year were the same with 59. 3rd down conversions last year were 44%, this year 41%. Defensively gave up 24% on 3rd down, this year 36%.
- Red zone last year: 24 touchdowns in 38 trips, opponents eight touchdowns in 24 trips.
- Red zone this year: Only 15 touchdowns in 36 trips. Opponents 15 touchdowns in 22 trips.
- Overwhelming stat: Last year we lost 16 turnovers, 18 this year. But defensively we gained 26 turnovers last season to only 11 this season.
- The kids are aware of all of this and they have to work on it and get it fixed.
- Dropped too many passes this season and need to be more wide open in play selection. Gilbert must use his legs more in the red zone due to drops.
- The offense moved the ball better against Baylor than they had all year and out-gained Baylor by 100 yards. This was unimportant, what is important is the turnover ratio and red zone touchdowns, where they are failing.
- Scored a field goal going into half, and stats say if you score to end the half and score to start the second half you usually win. They did this but didn't answer after giving up a score to Baylor.
- Offense had nine explosive plays and Gilbert had his best game. Huey played great, hurt his knee and is out 4-6 weeks, which is a big blow to the team. Chiles also had his best game.
- Offensive issues: Five penalties, five dropped passes; two of which would have been touchdowns, and lost two very costly turnovers.
- Also a lack of red zone production and too many field goals.
- Freshman Trey Hopkins will start at left guard for Michael Huey with redshirt freshman Thomas Ashcraft backing him up.
- Darius White showed progress in practice and needs to play more.
- Fozzy Whittaker got a stinger against Nebraska and his play has been limited since.
- There was more balance between the run and pass on Saturday which needs to continue.
- Robert Griffin and his backs and receivers played great, as did their punter who averaged 55 yards per punt.
- Texas D held Griffin in check with his feet for the most part. The defense had 10 hits on the quarterback.
- Defense mostly played well, but were burned in the passing game when blitzing. Played well on early downs.
- Jackson Jeffcoat couldn't play. Practiced some during hte week but couldn't push-off in pregame.
- They stopped the run except for Finley's 69 yard touchdown run.
- Kansas State runs well so they need to keep that up and stop the big play.
- The defense had nine missed tackles for 140 yards, only forced two turnovers and three is needed to win.
- Freshman Ashton Dorsey played well at DT and is coming on. He needs to play more because Randall and Okafor play a lot and get beat down.
- Kickoff coverage was great, average start for Baylor at the 23 yard line. Three touchbacks and two tackles inside the 20.
- Punt team was Okay averaging 42.3 per punt. Gave up no yardage in returns and downed one inside the 20. Two other punts should have been downed inside the 20 but went in the end zone.
- Dropped punts on returns are killing them.
- Made five field goals, only missing one from 48 yards. Due to so many field goals and lack of touchdowns they need to go for it more on fourth downs.
- Kickoff returns were poor except for the first one from Eddie Jones.
- Going to put Christian Scott on kickoff returns to see if there's an improvement with a bigger body.
- Punt block team has been great for years, but not this year.
- Curtis Brown is 13th in the country in punt returns but struggling with catching.
- Mike Davis, Christian Scott, and Adrian Phillips will get time in practice along with Brown at punt return.
- Curtis Brown had a good game and graded out with a winning performance except on the punt returns.
- Should we dump the seniors and play the young guys? Absolutely not. You play players that give you the best chance to win. Some older guys are playing great and have helped win a lot of games. Losses won't get them jerked out of the game and they know that.
- Recruiting: Most of the commits were at the game and it's doing fine, losing usually makes recruits think they'll have a better chance to play.
- Bill Snyder is one of the greatest coaches of all time, he and Mack are great friends and grand dads of the Big 12. He's a living Legend as Royal was to Texas.
- Kansas State is always well coaches, takes care of the ball, is physical on defense, and is a power running team.
- Daniel Thomas is one of the best backs in the country and already had 996 yards rushing. The Wildcats are 25th in the nation in rushing.
- The defense has a four man front and doesn't blitz much, only 26% of the time.
- Should be a great game and the coaches are disappointed but working as hard as they ever have. Kansas State beat UCLA and lost to Baylor.
